What is a web application?
A web application or "web app" is essentially an application that is accessed through
a browser over the internet (or an internal company network). Web applications on
the internet take many forms, such as webmail, online shopping (eCommerce) sites,
discussion forums and blogs. More business related applications include intranets,
extranets, document libraries, collaboration tools, appraisal/survey systems, online
classrooms and CRM
systems.
What is the advantage of web applications?
The key advantage of web applications is that they are hosted and managed centrally
and unlike conventional software, each user does not have to install a copy of the
application on their own computer in order to use it. This allows faster development,
quick distrbution, easy updates and simple centralised backup, not to mention that
the applications work in most modern browsers regardless of the type of computer
or operating system being used.
Mobile versions of these applications can also be created allowing remote access
via mobile phone, Pocket PC or Blackberry for example. Web applications can seriously
